My late ADHD diagnosis made my life a lot harder than it needed to be. First, I was diagnosed with Depression, and then years later, no, it’s Bipolar. I tried all the treatments for both and failed to get any worthwhile results. Disillusioned, I stopped seeking help and self-medicated with alcohol. Finally, after destroying my life, I found a caring and knowledgeable psychiatrist.

Hi, and welcome to my weekly ADHD Newsletter. I will be making some changes to my newsletter over the next couple of weeks, please bear with me while I rearrange things. IT is not my strong suit. I am also writing my second book dedicated to people who, like me, were diagnosed later in life or those who are still waiting!  If you want to share your story, I would love to hear it and, with your permission, possible inclusions in the final manuscript. Many hearts make the journey easier. In the months ahead I will be sharing my ADHD authors journey, warts and all and ultimately supporting other ADHDers on their adventure. If you have any questions about getting diagnosed or how to deal with the challenges that come with a late diagnosis, please send me an email jim@personaladhdtraining.com Weekly Tip Set aside dedicated time to daydream A study in the Psychological Science journal reveals that allowing your mind to daydream and wander helps boost your creativity. Society might see it as laziness or being away with the fairies. But daydreaming could also be the reason why you are highly creative at work. Daydreams have been proven to lower anxiety, reduce stress and enhance creativity.  “Use daydreaming as a tool to spark your ADHD curiosity and creativity, then get to work to bring it into reality” –  Jim Livingstone Grab a FREE copy of my Book About my book notes. I have read over 500+ books since 1992. Unfortunately, my limited ADHD memory means I forget most of it within a week or two! I started keeping notes of interest on Word docs for later reference, and I am using these notes as the basis of what I present here. When I’m reading and come across an inspiring idea or something that I haven’t heard before or something I want to try, I save it. That’s all my notes are. I’m not summarising the book. I’m just saving useful ideas for later recall and use.   “Pessimism leads to weakness, optimism to power.” — William James   Personal Power Your personal power comes from within, and by harnessing it effectively, you can achieve remarkable things.  Stay focused, remain persistent, and never underestimate your own potential. This week’s ADHD Advantage   Your ADHD Difference Celebrate your neurodivergence. Find the courage to live your life on your terms. Embrace your unique journey and pace, and don’t compare yourself to others.  With self-acceptance, perseverance, and the right strategies, you can live a fulfilling and satisfying life with ADHD. This week’s ADHD Challenge   ADHD at Work It is a personal decision whether you openly discuss your ADHD with your colleagues. Only do what you are comfortable with and that is in your best interests.  Working in a neurotypical office environment can present unique challenges for someone with ADHD, but there are several strategies that can be helpful in overcoming those challenges.   “Your ADHD is not a roadblock, it’s a detour that can lead you on a different and equally fulfilling path”.   Solutions Educate yourself about ADHD and how it specifically affects you. Ask to set a routine that gives you a sense of stability and makes it easier to manage your time effectively. Consider using noise-cancelling headphones, requesting a quieter workspace if possible, or arranging your desk in a way that minimizes visual distractions. Talk to your co-workers about your needs so that they can be supportive. But again you don’t have to explain why you If you are comfortable openly discussing your ADHD with your supervisor, it can help them understand your challenges better. Talk about strategies that have worked for you in the past, and explore accommodations or adjustments that could be made to support your productivity and overall well-being. Weekly Tip Sharing While your journey is deeply personal, sharing the successes and challenges with other neurodivergent individuals helps all concerned. Talking to others who understand the challenges of ADHD can provide valuable insights and coping strategies.   “Never underestimate the difference YOU can make in the lives of others. Step forward, reach out and help. This week reach out to someone that might need a lift.” – Pablo   Author  #adhdwithjimlivingstone Mobile : 61477888369Email: jim@personaladhdtraining.comWebsite: www.personaladhdtraining.com Facebook Instagram 2022 Jim Livingstone , all rights reserved.13 Anchorage Dr, Birtinya, Q 4575 Australiaunsubscribe DISCLAIMER :This newsletter is not intended to provide and does not constitute medical, legal or other professional advice.     “The biggest difference I’ve noticed between successful people and unsuccessful people isn’t intelligence or opportunity or resources. It’s the belief that they can make their goals happen”. – James Clear     Personal Power Personal power can manifest in various forms, such as self-confidence, assertiveness, resilience, and the ability to inspire and motivate others.  Your beliefs play a significant role in determining your sense of personal power. Changing or challenging your beliefs is crucial for personal growth and increasing your personal power. This week’s ADHD Advantage   ADHD: Unique Diversity Finding or creating an environment that celebrates diversity can be highly beneficial for individuals with ADHD. Certain environments or workplace setups will help you focus better. Ask about flexible work hours, such as allowing you to start and finish your workday at different times that accommodate your energy levels and help maximize your productivity. Keep working on finding the support and systems to help you thrive. This week’s ADHD Challenge   Information Overload Your ADHD brain is constantly battered with information.  This can present several challenges, such as struggling with maintaining focus and paying attention for extended periods of time. It affects your ability to complete tasks and stay organized. Too much information makes it tougher to retain instructions, remember information, or recall details accurately. This puts extra pressure on our limited working memory or short-term memory.   “Too much information, too many options makes life too complicated” – Jim Livingstone   Solutions •    The first step to sanity is FILTERING•    Will this information help or hinder my progress? •    Filter the information and extract for knowledge.•    Practise portion control – limit exposure.•    Detox, create your daily quiet time ritual by tuning out. Weekly Tip Awareness Awareness allows us to question the validity of our beliefs and challenge the negative stories that often hold us back.  This process of self-reflection and self-awareness empowers you to rewrite your own stories and adopt more positive and empowering self-talk. When you cultivate a sense of awareness, you become attuned to your thoughts, emotions, and actions. This heightened consciousness allows you to recognize patterns, identify limiting beliefs, and respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and intention. Awareness without judgment is a learned skill. Daily practice is a great start.   “Awareness is the greatest agent for change”. –  Eckhart Tolle   Would you like a FREE copy of my great book? Neurodivergent individuals often have different ways of processing information and thinking, which can bring fresh and innovative perspectives to various fields.

01 Novemberr 2023

“You have two choices in life; to accept things as they are, or accept the challenge to change them.” – Jim Livingstone   Personal Power Personal power grants you the right to make decisions about your own life, goals, and ambitions. To pursue personal growth, learning, and self-improvement.   This allows you to use your personal power to consider the impact of your choices on yourself, others, and the environment. Consider both the short and long-term consequences of your choices. This week’s ADHD Advantage   ADHD Speed Individuals with ADHD often have rapid mental processing, allowing them to come up with ideas and solutions quickly. We can connect different pieces of information swiftly, which can make us excellent problem solvers. This can be beneficial in situations that demand quick decision-making, such as during high-pressure situations or fast-paced environments. Link action to your faster processing speed and power through your tasks. This week’s ADHD Challenge   Converting Information into Knowledge Your ADHD brain loves new information. Dopamine is released during the learning process as it’s a new or novel experience. It feels so enjoyable that it can border on becoming an addiction. Your hyper-focus can work against you as you get lost in the information-gathering process, but fail to put it to use.   “Knowledge is the result of trialling and testing information; Information without action becomes mere words”.– Jim Livingstone   Solutions You have to convert the information into knowledge by actually using it. Action is the catalyst that transforms information into results Take ONE piece of information and test to see if it works in your life situation. Review your results and either yes, it did, or no, it didn’t help. Yes, keep doing it and build it into a routine or habit No, dump it and try another piece of information  Repeat Weekly Tip Dopamine Delights Bribe your ADHD brain with little splashes of dopamine to help you do tasks that you struggle with. The boring, rather die than do it ones. Set ONE task with a timeline, your intended result and the reward when you achieve it. For longer tasks, set up a couple of milestones for rewards As an example: After I make the bed, feed the dogs and pick up the dog poo, I give myself a week’s holiday on a tropical Island… just kidding I don’t pick up the dog poo…ha-ha.   “We are all born lazy, some people stay that way.” – Jim Livingstone   Would you like a FREE copy of my great book? In return, I would love an honest review so that I can share it withother people dealing with ADHD. It would be a great help and much appreciated. Please send me an email jim@personaladhdtraining.com, and I will send you back a pdf copy. Many thanks and cheers Jim For your FREE copy of My Book Notes,  www.personaladhdtraining.com    This offer is only for a limited time, don’t miss out. ” I think self-awareness is probably the most important thing towards being a champion.” – Billie Jean King. Personal Power Awareness is a powerful tool that allows you to tap into your personal power and make positive changes in your lives. When you cultivate a sense of awareness, you become attuned to your thoughts, emotions, and actions. This heightened consciousness allows you to recognize patterns, identify limiting beliefs, and respond to life’s challenges with greater clarity and intention.Awareness is a learnable skill. This week’s ADHD Advantage   ADHD Neurodiversity Neurodivergent individuals naturally approach problem-solving in unique ways, considering multiple perspectives and alternative solutions. Your varied ADHD cognitive styles can lead to more diverse and comprehensive problem-solving processes, finding solutions that might have been overlooked by a more neurotypical approach.   Both you and society can benefit by recognizing and embracing the strengths and unique perspectives that your neurodivergence brings tothe table. This week’s ADHD Challenge   Sh*t Memory I remember very little of what I read and learned. I have so much information, but forget I have it or remember where I put it. My level of frustration is off the scale. I regularly research articles and lose them in my system.   “Not only is my short-term memory terrible, but so is my short-term memory”.   Solutions Implement daily routines and structure:   I have simplified my filing system and duplicate files if I am not sure I’ll remember where I put them. I am going to use a neurotypical assistant to resort the files and see how that goes. Keep essential items in designated places and increase my awareness. Slow down and narrow my field of focus.  I am going to look into working with an ADHD coach, to help provide guidance and personalized strategies. Weekly Tip Perspective We all get caught up in our daily dramas, making mountains out of molehills. Take the time to reframe any issues by asking these questions Is it life-threatening? Are you fighting to survive in a war zone? Do you have a terminal illness? Do you have a warm bed to sleep in, warm food to eat and hot running water? Can you pursue your dreams tomorrow? If you do, you are doing OK and so far in front of the majority of the world’s eight billion people.  Be grateful for what you have, while you pursue what you want.   “Life is 10 per cent what happens and 90 per cent how you see it.” ― Jim Livingstone   Would you like a FREE copy of my great book?   “Asking for help is a sign of strength”   Personal Power Use it, nothing changes if nothing changes. Be bold in all that you do, and you’ll change your world. Throw yourself into everything with a mild obsession. Lift your intensity and keep going, even if it’s hard and uncomfortable. Don’t be afraid to stand out or look like a ‘different” you. This week’s ADHD Advantage   Problem-Solving Abilities Brainstorming, use your faster processing to produce lots of ideas Your unconventional thinking can help you approach challenges from different angles and come up with creative solutions. You naturally challenge rules and assumptions. Channel your rebellious nature into a productive outlet that solves problems for the greater good of all concerned. This week’s ADHD Challenge   Accepting Your Different First, know you are not at fault or faulty. You didn’t ask for your ADHD traits. Just because you feel and do things differently doesn’t mean it’s wrong, it’s just different. Get to understand how your ADHD brain operates, so you can use your ‘different’ strengths   “You are different – not deficient”   Solutions Don’t criticize yourself for things that are impossible for your ADHD brain to accomplish. You need to give yourself positive feedback for small and large achievements and encourage yourself with regular positive thoughts that reinforce your self-worth and self-confidence Be your best supporter and stay positive as you work out how to benefit from your different abilities. Don’t condemn them. They are part of what makes you unique. Believe you are a good person! Allowing yourself to be ‘different’ is critical to your success and happiness. Weekly Tip Build Resilience Embrace the discomfort of being different, rather than the false comfort of trying to fit in. Different people transcend their environment and stand out. Don’t listen to anyone who tells you what you can or can’t do in life. You alone get to decide. Be an original, colour outside the lines, and see where it takes you.   “It’s really important to share the idea that being different might feel like a problem at the time, but ultimately diversity is a strength?” – Carson Kressley   Would you like a FREE copy of my great book? “Everyone shines, given the right lighting.” – Susan Cain Personal Power Your ADHD brain has given you some extraordinary skills. It is your responsibility to learn how to capitalise on them and make this world a better place for yourself, this generation and those that follow. Your prehistoric ancestors used their ADHD brains and were the hunters who cared for the tribe. They used their impulsivity, unrelenting curiosity and hyperactivity to remain calm in a crisis. It is the reason why the rest of the world exists today. The world needs your help. Start small; think big. This week’s ADHD Advantage   Your Positive ADHD Traits ADHD Positives you need to love about yourself. Empathy Ingenuity Enthusiasm Hyper-Focus Light-hearted Spirit Intuition Creativity Unrelenting Curiosity Cool in a Crisis Embrace your ADHD and the creativity, humour, drive, and energy it brings! This week’s ADHD Challenge   Life is Messy A rough day can be a pain, and too many in a row can start a downward spiral that can be hard to reverse.  When all you want to do is lie in bed and call it a day. It’s normal to feel like sh*t, but you don’t have to lie in it! “The best thing about storms is that they always pass”. Solutions Kick back – punch life in the face… figuratively. Ask for help when you need it Take a break when you’re tired Be patient with your progress Allow yourself to make mistakes Remember better days are coming Treat yourself with kindness and compassion Weekly Tip Increase Your ADHD Motivation This is based on Dr. William Dodson’s concept of ADHDers having an interest-based brain. The 4 C’s of Motivation: Captivate, Create, Compete, Complete Captivate: make it interesting. Create: make it creative or novel. Compete: make it competitive or challenging. Complete: make it urgent, time pressure. Give it a go and see which ones work best for your ADHD brain.   “Smart people learn from everything and everyone, average people from their experiences, stupid people already have all the answers” -Socrates   Would you like a FREE copy of my great book?   A clear vision, backed by definite plans, gives you a tremendous feeling of confidence and personal power”. – Brian Tracy   Personal Power Your personal power is either restricted or expanded by the actions you take or don’t take. Taking positive action increases your personal power. Gathering more information, overthinking and procrastinating decreases your personal power. This week’s ADHD Advantage   Your ADHD Creativity When you are engaged in something you enjoy, that lights the fire in your soul, you have an abundance of energy. That energy can create amazing results. Do more things that provide that energy flow. That’s how the impossible becomes possible. This week’s ADHD Challenge   Taking Action Getting information is easy The problem most people have is taking that information and converting it into knowledge. Until you learn to use that information in a practical application, it isn’t knowledge. Once used, information becomes knowledge and, thereby, power.   “It is easy to find information. The challenge is converting information into knowledge by taking action and testing the information”. – Jim Livingstone   Solutions Stop accumulating information. Start using the information you already have. Take action on the information that moves the needle Information only becomes knowledge when you use it Develop the ability to act effectively on the information you have collected. If it doesn’t work, dump it and try the next piece of information. Weekly Tip Embrace Your ADHD Instead of trying to mask your ADHD, let it out for a run. Embrace your ‘different’ take on life, don’t hide from it. Our ADHD traits are just part of who we are. No apology needed. Whoever tells us it’s not acceptable is simply voicing their opinion We just happily disagree with it. ADHD… Hell Yeah! “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice”.
